The Lantern in the Desert
A young man stood at the edge of a vast and daunting desert, wanting to reach the beautiful oasis on the other side. He looked out at the endless sea of sand and felt paralyzed by the sheer size of the journey.
He approached a wise old elder who was sitting nearby. “Elder,” the young man said, “I wish to cross this desert, but I cannot see the whole path. How can I start a journey if I cannot see the destination or the way to get there?”
The elder smiled and, without a word, handed the young man a small, simple lantern.
“What is this for?” asked the young man. “This tiny lantern can only light up a few feet in front of me. It will not show me the oasis.”
“That is true,” replied the elder. “This lantern will not show you the end of your journey. But it will always show you where to place your next step. And then the next one after that. The journey across the desert is not made by seeing the destination, but by taking one step, illuminated by the light you have.”
He continued, “Trust the light you have for the step you are on. The path will reveal itself to you as you walk it. You just need to begin.”
The young man understood. He thanked the elder, lit the lantern, and took his first confident step into the darkness of the desert, his fear replaced by a focus on the small, bright patch of ground before him.

At the start of a new week, our goals can sometimes feel like a vast desert. We can feel overwhelmed because we don’t have a perfect plan or can’t see the final outcome. This story is a reminder that you don’t need to see the whole path to start. You just need enough light for the next step. Focus on what you can do right now, today. Trust the process and take that first step. The rest of the path will appear as you move forward.
